Religious Education

Many secondary pupils will soon be starting their English Baccalaureates. These are made up of 5 core subjects (English, maths, history or geography, the sciences and a language) but exclude Religious Education. Early day motion 1375 “Religious Education and the English Baccalaureate” was first tabled by Eastbourne & Willingdon MP Stephen Lloyd at the end of January. It came as a reaction to Government plans to exclude RE from being a mandatory humanities option alongside history and geography. The motion currently has 105 MPs’ signatories in support. Click here to see which MPs have supported this early day motion http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2010-11/1375. If your MP has not signed up then please write to them asking that they do. Our letters are not designed to protect our churches in some way but to acknowledge that “RE can inform young people in their spiritual awareness, development, identity and fulfilment”.
